I just picked up a Nikon D80 to "go" with my Macbook. They both fit into my pack, and should make for a good mobile photo "lab".

Its my first DSLR and I'm pretty stoked about the possibilities. Years ago I was into 35mm SLR's but as the digital age took over, I turned to point and shoot cameras for the ease of "developing" photos.

Its been so long, I need to re-learn a lot of things. I've taken a few photos, but nothing great yet, mostly just my cat. Hopefully the weather will be nice tomorrow, so I can get some scenic shots.

I need to get a decent, but not so complicated photo app. What do you guys recommend? Free would be nice, but I'm willing to spend a little. I'm just a hobbyist, and have no professional aspirations.

Life's rough when you have nothing to do all day. I could barely coax her into opening her eyes. I took that shot from 15 feet away.

Back to my question......what about software?

iPhoto seems rather clunky to me, and the trial version of Capture NX2 seems pretty complicated.

Any recommendations?

Is Capture NX2 worth the learning curve?

Suggestions?

I'm using the trial version of Capture NX2 right now. what do you guys think of it?

I know....my cat pics are kinda lame, but I'm still getting used to the functions of the D80. Starting out slow, so to speak.

Here's one I took earlier. I just darkened the foreground a little, using NX2.

Nothing great, but the sky did look like that.

Looks great! Curious, was that mounted on a tripod?

I downloaded the trial version of Elements, but it can't do NEF/RAW files. Other than that deal killer, it works great.

Is there anything else?

Although I am digging deeper into NX2 and maybe I'll end up settling on it.
