We are testing an offsite backup solution on one of our test servers. The client application connects to the offsite server on secured connection on port 443 (https).

The problem we have is that when the scheduled services are enabled to run the backup every hour, the scheduler stops responding. The only way to restart the it is by rebooting the service or the server.

If we connect to the offsite backup server on port 80 (http), the scheduler behaves and runs as it should. We also have client machines e.g macbook running OS 10.4 which are also loaded with the same application. If they are outside the mac network then they connect fine on the secured channel (https) and run the scheduled backups as normal but as soon as they are connected to the same network as the mac server then the scheduler stops on there too.

The backup client talks to the server at internals to check for any changes.

I am not a mac expert therefore i do i check what is causing the service to stop responding on the mac server. I disabled the firewall thinking that there may be something on there which may be causing this but made no change

Thanks for all the help in advance

Any proxies or firewalls between source and destination. ?

I have seen this behavior with Cisco ASA firewalls and ISA proxies.

It may not be the root cause of your problem, but it is worthwhile looking into.

There is a zyxel firewall where the server is based but this works for all users who are outsite the Mac Network

The Mac network is behind a vigor route/firewall. If the clients pick up IP from the router then they work ok but if the server is online and issuing IP then the backup scheduler stops working.

We worked out that if any of the clients connect to the remote backup server on https while connected to the mac server then the scheduler stops but if are outside the mac network then it works fine.

Alternatively, if we change both the mac server and clients to connect on http to the remote backup server then it connects fine

There is something on the mac server which is stopping it. Disabled the firewall on the server but no change

Good to see you are narrowing down the problem.

When you say HTTPS, which by default is 443, are you sure that the HTTPS implementation on your network is actually 443.

At our company, we have moved away from that default.

Cheers
Marc

Also, are we talking TCP or UDP

We are supply the remote backup solution to this company. Their IT equipment is looked after an external company

We are new to mac as we usually deal with Windows equipment therefore how would i check whether the https implementation is 443?

Hi,

Have to admit I can not help you with that as I am not a product specialist on any of this. I can only share some of the things we went thru in a similar situation.

My suggestion would be to get someone with detailed technical knowledge on Mac Server and Firewall/proxy have a look at the respective configurations.

Apologies if I can not be of any ( more detailed ) help.

Good luck.
McBie
