Slow transfer speeds to USB drive

Mac OS X 10.5.5 Leopard 2.16 GHz Intel Core2 Duo
I have a usb thumb drive I use to transfer files between my home computer (mac) and my work computer (pc). Transferring 1GB to the drive at home takes about 10 minutes, while at work if I transfer the same amount it only takes about 1 minute. My work pc is 2 years old and does not have close to the processing power that my mac has - is there something I can do to increase the transfer speeds from the mac? thx
