I have a late 2006 macbook, Didn't use it for 2 weeks when I went on holiday.
When I got back the Mac will not charge, the power light stays green.
It powers up okay, OS X picks up the battery and says the health is poor however its only cycled 139 times, and before I went away it said the health of the battery is Good.
Is there anything i can do to recover my mac as its very inconvenient for me to get to an apple repair centre or store.

So I'm guessing you didn't use it for those 2 weeks? Leaving it for a prolonged period like that may have effected the battery, but 2 weeks just doesn't seem like it would be long enough to do that.

What are you using to see the cycles and health of the battery? Maybe if you leave it charging overnight the status will change? If not, I would call apple and tell them what is going on, assuming you have apple care.

I believe it is under a certain amount of cycles and isn't performing up to par, apple will replace it for free.

EDIT: Check out this thread for more info as well:

I have 3 year of apple care, well about a year now.
I am using the battery checker thats built into Leopard under 'about this mac'.
I will try charging overnight and get back to you on what happened...
It wasn't used for the 2 weeks either, its just annoying :(.
