disconnecting devices from imac

i am trying to figure out how to safely disconnect my digital cameras from my wife's imac after downloading photos.i go to the finder icon, click on it, then take the device and drag to the trash can, but when i disconnect the device...i get the did it wrong box. what am i doing wrong? thanks

When I'm done downloading photos, I just turn off the camera. Never had any problems. Mine doesn't show up on the desktop, just in iPhoto.

For external drives, you definitely want to do as you mentioned.

After you eject a device, wait for the light(s) to stop before you pull the plug. If there are no lights, wait a good ten seconds.

Eject it from iPhoto, then eject it from the desktop.
