Alternative to Acrobat

Since the basic Acrobat is only available to Windows users is there an alternative software available for use with leopard?

I've searched but haven't found anything. I just want to be able to scan and save a PDF file. Nothing fancy.

PDF creation is built in to OS X

If you scan anything in to whatever application, simply select print. The option to print to PDF is called Preview (its a button). There are also other options in the PDF menu next to preview in all OS X print dialogues

Thx folks. I knew about the scan document, but the size is usually large. I'll look into the settings further.

As to Acrobat for MAc..it's only the Professional edition thats available..and pricey!

To reduce size, you can set the level at which to export for PDF, usually Best provides a huge file, and Better gives you the best view plus small size.

Harry, the reader isn't the problem. I have to scan doc's to send to people via email. Acrobat basic would be all that I need, but alas they only offer it to Windows users. The next option for Mac is about 499.00 which I don't need.

If the size of the files is a problem, there is another hidden OS X secret

A little known app called ColorSync Utility (in Utilities) lets you run filters on PDF files. One of its many filters lets use adjust the image quality and sampling.

Just right click a PDF file and select open with... ColorSync Utility

There is an RGB icon in the app that gives you access to the filters
