So at times I have to turn off my IMAC completely and then turn it back on because I can't get it to "wake up" if I have not used it in a few hours. Is that something in preferences? I changed my sleep setting but it is still doing it.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the PMU/SMC. Not sure of your model, but here's a few links.

just to be sure, are you using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, becasue it could be that they are switching themselves off when the computer is asleep, for whatever reason
