Can anyone tell me how important the "Receipts" folder is?? I know updating needs this folder, but is it vital to anything else? I accidentally deleted it while cleaning some unwanted references to other stuff while there, and emptied the trash without realizing that the Receipts folder had somehow become selected as well. Holy stupid batman. Are all the receipts etc from every bit of software on my computer gone forever?! Thanks in advance...

I believe it's also used to repair permissions, when using Disk Utility.
Rule #1. Don't mess with the System folder. ;)

Do you use Time Machine? This is the ideal scenario to see how it works.

The receipts folder is used in keeping track of the version of the software installed and for permission like was suggested.

You will be able to continue to run, but you will have a problem when comes to updating anything.
