Well you could try PageMaker. Adobe drop this for inDesign. Or you could try using illustrator to design but you aren't going to have a fun time figuring out which way things will print when you do front and back.
just take one from torrent, try indesign or quark. Old people who don't know anything of change and mostly stubborn professionals who've been in the biz forever usually swear by quark. But indesign is becoming more of an emergence in the industry and i think more intuitive w/ better tool sets.
