Distorted Audio with built-in line in or out

I'm running Os X 10.5.5 on a dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 machine but the sound is horrible.

When I use a usb headset the sound is better; but I have already a 7 port usb hub attached and all my ports are used. I want to use the built in audio.

This is what I was able to get about the machine-- I need help desperately.

what are you using to play sound thru? USB speakers? mini jack out speakers?

Regular speakers { Connected to sound card at the rear end of the computer}. Would mini jack speakers be any better; I haven't tried.
