Best multifunction laser

I need a laser printer that reliably scans and faxes. I don't need color. Ease of use and reliability is more important than speed, features, etc.

I was looking at the better Canons. Anybody have something they are happy with.

I'm an avid Canon fan, but inkjet technology rather than laser. In the latter bracket, Brother units are regarded as good, reliable machines. The MFC5540 an example, but getting on in years; or the MFC 7340, or the 7840 if you want to go wireless.

Unless something has changed in the last two weeks NONE of the Canon monochrome multifunction machines could scan using any Mac system, unfortunately. Print but not scan. Kind of a dealkiller, eh? : (
