Problem displaying my Mac on TV

I have a 12' powerbook g4... I just bought the adapter to hook the laptop up to the tv either using a component hook up, or an S-video hook up. I can get "something" to display on the tv... it is the mirror image of my laptop screen however it is black and white and out of phase. The right side of the laptop image is on the left side of the tv screen, then there is a black line, and then there is the left side of the laptop screen on the right side of the tv screen.... any ideas?

not one person with an idea???
