I have a 500gb external hdd i have been using for over a year to back up my files on my pc now that I have a MB I want to use it to keep my MB backed up also. OSX wants to reformat the drive before TimeMachine will back up to it... obviously I don't want to do that...

How can I partition this external HDD and use half of it for windows and half of it for mac? Basically turning it into 2 seperate HDD ?

On the PC the drive is most likely formatted in NTFS.

You will still have to take the data off before reformatting. Then you can use disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities) to reformat the drive in to two partitions, Mac OS Extended and FAT32 (usually called DOS format)
