Hi all. I've got a 3.2 2x4 Mac Pro on the way and have been considering various disk options. I think the Apple RAID controller is out of the question because of its 3Gb single channel. I have also been looking at the RocketRAID 4320, but am concerned that reported slow bios initialization will add about 20s to boot. Not the end of the world, but not ideal.
At the moment, I have 2 WD VelociRaptors (WD3000HLFS) and 2 WD Caviar Black (WD1001FALS) waiting to be installed. Unless I can get a substantial performance gain from putting the VR's in a RAID 0, I'm considering using one for OSX and one for <cough> Vista. I'll then use the two 1TB WD Black's for data.
While I think this is the simplest config in terms of a performance system, I'm curious to know if anyone thinks the RockRAID (or other) RAID 0 option is going to yield a worthy benefit. I'm also curious to hear about successful SAS configs. I have looked at SAS as an option, but the VR's are showing, at least by BareFeats, to be a better, and usually faster, option. I don't think SSD is a good option for anyone at this point.
Thanks in advance for your input.
