I have an old iMac G3 and the speakers have blown out. I tried using the speakers from my iMac G4, but they do not fit into the headphone jack. Question - Is it possible to buy external speakers for the machine? How difficult is it to replace the existing speakers?

You could try watching this YouTube - iMac G3 Upgrade: Part Two (about 3 - 4 minutes in). It looks pretty daunting, having to take so much stuff off or out to get at the speakers.

So, I'd invest in a cheap 2-hand home audio - seriously - and use the amp and spkrs to boost the iMac audio from the headphone socket. Total cost? About US$25-30.
