Can your spaces be saved?

For instance, what if you have specific tasks in spaces and you wanted to save them so that when you shut down your machine and then turn it back on, the work would still be in the spaces.

What you're asking for sounds like Sleep or Hibernate modes. Macs don't have a Hibernate mode, so you've only got Sleep mode. If you've got a desktop Mac, then just click on the Apple at the top left and select Sleep. If you've got a laptop, then simply close the lid.
