Migration Assitant Help Needed

My old G5 is acting up and will not boot up sometime. The hard drive is fine. Anyways I bought a new Mac, need to get all my applications and email over to the new mac. Will the migration assistant work if I place my old hard drive in one of the open bays in the new Mac?

Using the Firewire will not work since it will not boot.
