How to lock computer?

Hi all!!!

I would like my mac to lock the computer after 10 minutes, but i still want the applications to be running!!! That is very important!!!

I have set it so that it does lokc after 10 minutes which is fine. If i come back to it not long after my apps are still running. BUT when i come back to it, say after 30 mins it taes me back to the login screen and all my apps are now closed!!!

Anyone know how to solve this??? A step by step guide would be great!!

How about something simple like setting a password protected screensaver. This will leave everything running but prevent access by anyone else.
