• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.

Hello all,
I am attempting to by an Apple computer as a gift but know very little about the systems.

I need the best minimum configuration for post video editing and production.

What would be the minimum CPU speed, # of processors, RAM, graphics card, and anything else I am missing.

From what I have learned so far, I am betting I will end up switching to a Mac myself after I make this purchase.

Thank you for your responses and time helping me out.

Well, even a Mac mini can do video editing. The specs for either iMovie 08 or Final Cut Express show that they both work with a mini. You'd have to buy a monitor of course.

RT Extreme, a Final Cut Express feature takes advantage of a dedicated video card, which the mini and current Mac book (non-pro) do not have.

New laptops are being announced on Tuesday, so if that is a consideration, wait.

Further information regarding my question...

First, Thanks Xstep for the reply, that is the kind of info I was looking for. I didn't know about the software needing a dedicated video card.

PowerBookG4 - This will be for a relative who does free lance video work using digital video, I am not quite sure of the format. I was given the task of doing the research for the purchase, and will be a minority contributor to the gift. The Apple will be used mostly to edit training videos, presentations, ceremonies, speeches and other similar projects. I am sure the person will use it for their personal photos and iTunes, but I don't think that really matters as much.

I hope that is enough info. Thanks for your time.

If editing standard def video then something like a mac book is fine but if high def video is a requirement then you defo want a high spec machine
