Time Machine HDD security

Sorry if this thread is in the wrong place - I think it could've gone here or in the apps section...

I have Time Machine backups going to my external HDD. I am wondering, what if someone steals my HDD? Will they be able to access all my data? How can I apply some security to my HDD to prevent this? Having a secure logon on my MacBook is kinda redundant if someone can just steal data off my HDD.
