iPod Shuffle error--what's with the blinking lights?

Strange...when I push any button on my first-gen iPod shuffle, it just flashes the alternating green/orange lights on the front side. No music. It connects/syncs fine. Any idea what error this indicates, and how I get beyond it? --Pete
