spotlight returning no results

for the last week my spotlight search function will not find anything i search for on my external HD. it's always worked fine before this week. does anyone know what's going on?

Silver M1 iMac 512/16/8/8 macOS 11.6
Have you tried booting from the external drive and running Spotlight from there?

yes. it's just so weird that it worked last week and not this week. my computer is also going a lot slower than usual. i think i might just delete and do a fresh install..
