Installation issues

Can anyone help me? I can't seem to install anything on my macbook (osx 10.4.11) I've tried to install Parallels and a driver for a MIDI keyboard but when i double click the icon, it flashes up on the list of applications, as if it were opening, but then disappears again.

is it worth me reformatting the hard drive? and if so, can I just drag my applications onto and external hard drive and drag them back once I have reformatted? Will they still operate like that?
