• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hi. I've recently put a 20 year old vcr recording of a karaoke performance onto dvd using a vcr and my Philips home dvd recorder with good result and no playback problems. Now I've tried putting them onto my mac (to youtube!) and my mac just reads a blank disc. Any idea where I've gone wrong? I dont actually use dvds much so all this is fairly new to me.

In your spec under your avatar, it state you have a powerbook. Do you have the problem on it also.

Perhaps the format of the content that's on the disk is wrong. Any more information on that?

Did you finalize the recording on your DVD Recorder. If you didn't, check the manual for the dvd recorder and do that. If a disc isn't finalized, it will appear as a blank disc on your mac. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I finally found my Philips instruction manual, finalized the dvd (did I tell you I was new to this dvd recording?) and after a couple of goes got it to play on my iBook:D

So how do I now get it from disc to hard drive so I can have a go at my first YouTube-ing? There is 6 different titles and I just want to use a couple. Can I import them individually or the whole disc. How do I import them?

iBook g4 running OS-X 10.4.11 with iMovie, idvd and div-x.
