XP's ms word can't read Mac's ms word file

When I save a .doc file in my mac and try to open it on windows, windows shows weird characters instead of the content of file. what are the possible reasons for this?

what font is the original file saved as. is the office 2007? make sure it isnt a docx file

As coach advises make sure you are not saving Office 2008 files as .docx which is the default and Windows PC will not be able to open the files.

Go to preferences and check to save all documents as .doc only.
