Locked files on an external drive

I got a MacBook and I hooked up my external drive and it seems as if there are a few folders locked?

What is goin on there??

It is a PC formatted hard drive.

I also need to transfer around 340 gb off the drive to reformat it, its a 1TB drive.

I tried to do the Time Machine, but it said drive had to be reformatted.

But short of buying a new drive which I dont want to or really neeed, what are my options?

Can you partition it and use part for Time Machine?

Dont know its a PC format drive does that help, I am not really knowledgeable about the hardware side.

But I can learn real fast.
