Is it common for Office 2008 (Word, especially -- hangs on splash screen for at least a minute) to run slow on a MacBook with 512MB RAM?

I think you need more RAM. 512MB doesn't cut it anymore. 2GB at least.

I have 2 GB of memory in my MacBook and Word 2008 stays on the splash screen for around 10 seconds or so before the program loads. Running a large program like MS Office 2008 with only 512 MB of memory is just not going to be very pleasant. Add more memory to your machine.

Regards.

This would be a good opportunity then to ask what kind of RAM I need. I know 2GB is the max, but what should I look for when I go shopping on NewEgg? Certain brand, size, etc.?

No I have not as postage here from Australia prohibits it but am using 4 x 512MB matched PC3200 in my FW800 from OWC no problem and their after sales service when a Mercury Extreme 1.3GHz CPU upgrade had problems was first class with free replacement postage here.

Semi-related Word question:

I copied and pasted some text over from a PDF. This PDF block of text, however, screwed up the double spacing between it and my own original typing. By screwed up, I mean it's compacted the space between the text to neither double space nor 1.5 space. It's somewhere in between.

I adjusted the double spacing, tabbing, etc. but nothing seems to work. Sounds complicated, I know, but there's gotta be an easy fix.
