Is a .Mac account pretty much the same as mobile me ?

As the title says

Is .mac essentially the same thing as mobile me ?
If not how do they differ ?

I am getting an iphone in the next month or two and know that the mobile me thing is pretty cool and i will want link my phone, mac, address book etc but will .Mac work the same way or offer anything different

It's the same thing renamed with some added features. They are literally the same, .mac is now called mobile me.
