Mail application not working?

I love using mail, but recently it has stopped working. When Mail gets my email from gmail, it repeatedly gets one mail. I went to gmail.com and deleted the email mail was trying to get, but mail somehow continues to get the mail.
So I removed my account from mail and re-added it on, but now mail gets no mail! Does anybody have the same problem? Does anybody have a suggestion or solution?
