I sit about 3' away from my monitor. Is a 30" cinema diplay going to be too big and over powering at such a distance. My main use is photo editing!

You may have to move back a bit farther than 3 feet for comfortable viewing but not withstanding, a 30 inch cinema display should be fine. Actually ideal for photo editing and doing graphics work. And of course for watching DVD movies! :D

Regards.

30" cinema display... good resolution but very poor contrast ratio. For the best photo editing I always go with high spec LCD TV's its the only way to get the vibrant colours.

Vibrant colors are nice at all but most likely not true to life colors, and most of time they need to be accurate.

I had a Hitachi 17" monitor with 700:1 contrast when I put it next to my current screen the whites look creamy and the blacks seem gray. I suppose it's personal preference but I love colour.

You will be amazed how fast you get used to the size of the display and sitting so close is no problem at all. You will actually think that it is not big enough after a while!
