Hello, I just installed transmission because I want to download some torrents. However, I found a tutorial online and even with that tutorial, I am finding this terribly complicated.
The part I can't do is "port-forwarding." If I'm understanding right, you have to link your router to a port or something...but what if you don't use a router??
I use ethernet for my internet.
Why is this so complicated?

If you're not using a router you don't need to configure port forwarding.

In the preferences of transmission it will tell you which port it's trying to use and the status od the port (open, closed etc).

If it 'green' and says port open - happy days you're good to go.

If not you'll need to open a port on your mac firewall. If that's the case post back and I'll try and help you do that.

By Ethernet I'm assuming you mean you have your computer hooked up directly to the modem?

I guess so....

And yes, the button is red and it says my port is closed. :(

Open System Prefs >> Security >> Firewall. Make sure "Set access for specific services and applications" is selected.
Click the "+" button and select Transmission from you Applications folder.
Make sure the pull down menu is set to "Allow incoming connections".

I have done that already. The port is still closed. I assumed there was another step I was missing.

I've found that in my experience with Transmission, I need to select "Allow all incoming connections" in my security prefs... "Access for specific services and applications" with Transmission allowed, still just won't work for me...

The bit that plugs into your computer at one end and the wall/phone at the other end - should be some class of box in the middle.

ok so my modem's brand is Sun Conversion Technologies

Model 110CM

10BASE- T/FL Converter

one side connects to the ethernet port on my computer and the other end to a jack in the wall for computers (not the phone jack)

That's a fibre optic convertor. It's just pipes your data connection to your Mac so that isn't impacting your ports - open or closed.

However... I wonder if your ISP is 'traffic shaping' certain ports.

Who's your ISP?

I'm gonna take a wild guess that ISP is internet service provider? That would be my university? I'm guessing

Hmm.. I believe you may be out of luck here. I'm almost positive your University has this blocked or throttled to where you can't download anything fast. In any case, there's really no way to manually forward your port since you aren't an admin on the network.

It wouldn't surprise me if the university is blocking certain port ranges.

You could try a variety of port numbers.
You could try asking around to see what others on campus are using.

Thanks for that write up, I have always wondered how to open ports for programs. Worked for my airport extreme so thanks.
