iPhone Sync Issues

MBP, 15", 2.2GHz quad core i7, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD 5400 - rpm
I've got a MacbookPro and a 3G iPhone, when i connect the phone to the macbook and iPhoto opens up to import my pics, but itunes does nothing and there is no icon on my desktop so i cant sync any music or videos or anything... Any Ideas?

iPhoto opens up because it recognizes the iPhone as a USB camera. You can turn this off in iPhoto.

The iPhone will not show up on the desktop like other iPods do, it just doesn't do that and it's by design.

You need to open iTunes to sync media with the iPhone.

It doesn't show up in iTunes and the phone doesn't even recognize that it's been plugged into a computer
