using 'spotlight'/search function in a finder window - an item i know is is there does not show up. this happens frequently. basically the finder seems useless, as mostly nothing i'm looking for shows up.

please help me understand what is going on here. it is amazingly annoying that i can't do a simple search and find something i know is there. i must be doing something wrong because this makes no sense.

here is an image showing a finder window open as well as the search with '0 results' search_what.png

go in to the terminal app and paste this in

sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/LACIE

that should work but might take a while to index that external

hi thanks so far, would you mind explaining about what it is that you are suggesting i do (what is this going to do etc), and maybe make a suggestion as to why i need to go to this length for something so simple?

if not can you point me towards where i can read about this issue?

In the system preferences > Spotlight there is a privacy tab where folders and disks can be excluded from Spotlight
