Sound is muffled

My brother's macbook rev c produces a muffled and quiet soud when playing anything other than system sounds. The windows partition's sound works, so the speakers are not ruined, and there is not red light in the headphone hole. So it must be a software issue.

I checked in system preferences -> sound but everything was normal.
