Hey fellow Mac heads.

I need some advice and or information on how I can fix my itunes dilemma. My macbook has 250 gigs. I have an external HD that is 1 tb. Well, the issue comes about when trying to figure out how I will run my itunes without having a huge headache.

I want to be able to play itunes with the itunes directory straight off the 1 tb external HD. But I also want to have around 200-gigs of music on my macbook for listening to when I am not at my house hooked up to my terra-byte. Is this possible if so what tools do I need to achieve this without always having to add things to itunes and have a headache.

Thanks,
chaM

Plug in the external and add both that music and the stuff on your HDD to iTunes?

I am going to fill up my 250-gig hd with media. Realistically around 200-gigs I am going to start using the external hd. So once I have about 200-gigs of music I am going to add it to my external hd with my other 500-gigs of music. The issue is when I want to play the music via itunes I am going to have to constantly rename/edit the music in the itunes library. If I switch some songs off the 250-gig hd with the 1-tb external hd itunes will say these files can not be located. Is there any easy fix or ideas for my problem.

Thanks

You could create two librarys, one for your macbook HDD and one for your external HDD. When you click on the apple application logo hold down the alt key and it will give you the option to create a new album or select a different album. Just create one album for each hard drive. I think this is what you're looking for, not sure i completely understand the question.

Keeping your iTunes collection on an external

The following assumes you want to keep all your iTunes music and movies on an external disk and ensure new music is always stored on the external drive.

First, you need to consolidate your iTunes Library to a folder you have chosen of the external drive.

Select the command consolidate library from the Advanced Menu. This will copy all your itunes media to the external folder and link the itunes library file to it

The files will now be on the external while the library.xml file (the index as it were) will still be in the Users > Me > Music folder of your mac.

If you want this file on the external as well as well, copy it to external iTunes folder, start itunes with the alt key pressed and you will have the option to select the library file now on the external

Select the library file you just copied and now both your music and the library are on the external

You can now delete the old Itunes folder off your mac

You can also use the choose library dialogue to switch between a large music collection on the external and a smaller music folder on the mac if you wish

I have wanted to do this for a while and the instructions were always way over complicated. Your directions were CRYSTAL.

Thank you very much!
