Slow USB drives on Mac-Mini

Hello,

I have to WD external usb 500GB hard drives. One I have 2 partitions, one is 100Gb for Time Machine backup, and the other is 400Gb for my music collection that is almost 135GB.

Both drives I have formated with Mac OS Extended. To start with I had both drives Journaled. Then I was having problems with speed & read that I should disable Journaled, so I did.

I am still having problems with speed when transfer large amounts of data. I wanted to backup my music of 135Gb to the second drive but it says it is going to take 90+hours! Thats nuts! What can I do to improve this?

Both drives are new, cables too.

After your idea about cable i realized I was going through a usb hub. I hooked the drives straight to the mini & got a transfer of 2 hours.
