Which compression formats does Mac support by default?

With no added software, what compression formats do Macs support?

Trying to determine the best format to offer downloads in to Mac users. Do you support?: .bz2, .gz, .zip? If so, which is preferred?

2019 iMac 27"; 2020 M1 MacBook Air; macOS up-to-date... always.
I would say just use .zip. OS X now supports that natively, and we can even create a zip file from the context menu without extra software. Anyone running an older version of the OS can easily get a freebie un-zipper if need be.

Definitely zip. Some people still insist on using stuffit .sit files and it drives me nuts...

.tgz /.tar.gz is also supported natively, and is probably more friendly to the command-line crowd.
