Help, I'm an old mac user, have an original imac with 8.5os. Tried to upgrade my ram(via a genius at apple bar). They are unable to install 2-128mg ram, I was told its too new, meaning I need an older 128mg ram chip. I would like to know if I can beef up my imac to support os X and my new ipod, or do I need to buy a whole new system? Thanks in advance

if you can find it and upgrade, the imac will support os x panther.

If the RAM chip fits the specs for the machine it will work, regardless of its age. Try another dealer or get your ram from a third-party. Upgrading the RAM in the original iMac is not as easy as it should be but you can still do it yourself if you wish. The genius must have been on a caffine low when you talked to him/her (or he didn't want to refer you to another dealer).

233mh, was told I could add up to 512ram, but really only need 256 so I can run os x and use my ipod.
