bought a 30" mac hd display for my 1.8 dual core g5 power mac running osx 10.4.11. The card in my computer only allowed me to get 1280x800 resolution. I upgraded to the ATI Radeon 9800 xt mac to power the display to get the optimal resolution of 2560x1600.

I bought the following on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270256864779&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

Product description is: Mac ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256MB Video Card G4/G5 Edition

I put the card into my computer and still only got 1280x800.

So I installed the following software updates:
ati-mac-rom-update-aug-2005.dmg
ati-radeon-10-3-6-jan2005.dmg
macosx-ati-displays-4-5-7.dmg

I am still only getting 1280x800.

Furthermore both my system profiler and Ati control panel info profile seem to think the 9800 Pro with 128 ram is installed -- rather than the 9800 XT with 256 ram.

System profiler says:
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro:

Chipset Model: ATY,R350
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 128 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4e48
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-A07525-130
Displays:
Cinema HD:
Display Type: LCD
Resolution: 1280 x 800
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Display:
Status: No display connected

Did I install the wrong ROM update? So now the computer thinks its a different card?
How do I reverse that?

The card looks like the XT not the PRO -- when I compared it to pictures on the web.
It looks like this:

QUESTIONS:
Is the 9800xt the same as the x800xt?

Why does my machine say I have the PRO installed?

Is there newer software that I need?

How can I get the 2560x1600 resolution?

Help please.

Take it the card is connected to the power supply via the connecting cable?

Otherwise ask applemacanix as they have excellent feedback for such highh volume sales.

Sounds like you picked up your card from one of the infamous sloppy flashers who sell other people's work on eBay. They get the altered (smaller) firmware (that fits on the smaller PC compatible video card EEPROMs) from the hardworking folks trying to help others for free. Then they don't credit the person, take the firmware and flash it on to the PC video cards. Occasionally, the cards are on the money, but there are reputable flashers on eBay (find out from Strangedogs.com) that get it right all the time.

From someone who has flashed his share of video cards to Mac, it appears as though your ebay seller used 9800 Pro firmware on the XT card, making the card think it is only capable of the 9800 Pro's processing and not the considerably more robust XT. Caveat Emptor. The cards can sometimes be reflashed, but it is highly technical, usually requires a PC with a PCI video card installed, and is prone to screw ups.

Good luck.

I recently got a an ATI Radeon 9800 XT (Powercolor model XR98T-D3) PC Retail version to install on my G5 (Dual 1.8Mhz June 2004 model).

I flashed the card with the 9800 MAC PRO 256 MB 134 ROM (full 128k rom) since i read that flashing it with the XT Rom would make the DVI port unusable. To flash i asked someone with Apple Remote Desktop to do it from another computer.

After rebooting i sadly realized that my screen is so corrupted that i can't use it. I have tried several times ro re-flash the card but since i can't see anything that i'm doing it's very hard.

I believe i flashed the card with the right rom (128K). The number on the card's ROM CHIP is 25P05AV STI 9318C. Although i have read that this number refers to a 64K chip, when i first dumped the ROM it gave me a 128K PC file.

I have now quit trying to get this card to work on my mac.
