Heres an idea I had for a radio add on for teh iPod. Not knowing much bout how this works or even owning an iPod I dunno if it would work.
From what i understand the microphone go's strate to the record screen when you plug it in. I was thinking you could use the same tecnique to control the little recever you plug into the earphone/remote plug. Heres a little diagram to show what i mean a bit better.
