Macbook pro lcd monitor question

Hello

Call me dumb, i have a macbook pro core 2 duo, and i was wondering why when i am working in a bright place my screen gets dark, and it isnt possible to make it brighter and is hard to see, and at night it gets brighter. Shouldnt it be the opposite?

When its dark, i dont need the screen to be bright as its easier to see it when its dark, and during the day in an office thats bright i need the screen to be bright so i can see!?

It has something to do w/ the light sensor...don't worry bout it just use the nice little function keys up top to deal w/ it. I do the same thing w/ my MBP
