How to burn DVD movies from avi files

I just bought a macbook and I was wondering how you would convert an avi files and burn it onto a dvd using mac OSX.

Your Mac's Specs
Macbook(W) 2GHz, 80GB HD, 1G RAM, Windows XP
a program called "toast" from roxio will do this all for you. although it does have a bit of a price tag.
i don't personally know of a freeware way to do it.
