My friend JUSt got a new U2 iPod for Christmas, and while her computer recognizes it just fine, iTunes will not. Any suggestions?

is it pc formatted, or mac formatted? it should say on the box. if its mac, pc will recognize it, but itunes wont, youll need to reformat it to pc which will erase it.

One tip. DON'T FORMAT THE IPOD USING THE WINDOWS FORMAT TOOL OR DONT FORMAT IN WINDOWS EXPLORER! I did this and the firmware was deleted and the thing wouldn't turn on. No way out of it. Had to return it. So yeah. That might've saved an iPod.

To reformat it to FAT32, use the iPod utility on the PC (it's on the CD that came with the iPod). The iPod utility on the Mac formats in HFS+, which the PC can't read.

and as shaun89 already said, do not format it using the Windows Explorer!!
