im considering trading my ibook which is:

12 inch g4 800 640 ram 30 gig drive

for a powermac which is:

dual g4 500 (1mb l2 cachce per processor) with 512 ram powermac 60 gig drive, 16mb ati rate 128 pro (2x agp)

now my question is would the dual processor actually end up being faster than my current g4 800?

also since my mitsubishi diamond plus 200 (21" monitor) has 2 inputs, and has a max res of 1800x1440, i should be able to run the mac at that res as well right?

Probably not, at least not for tasks or applications that aren't specifically optimized for dual-processors.

I'm not familiar with the resolution support of that machine's video card, but it will depend upon the card and the OS, not the monitor.

it would be faster, but the extra ram your ibook has pretty much evens it out, the bigger hd is good, the graphics card is ok, you should still be able to run at that resolution, but I suggest you get more ram for the poweermac if you do trade, that will give it the little extra needed to outperfornm your ibook.

What leads you to believe the dual 500 would be faster? Dual processor systems perform well when used for dual processor-optimized tasks and applications, but otherwise, the lower clock speed, less powerful video card, and slower bus basically ensure that the iBook will be the faster of the two machines. Remember, the dual 500 is already a 4 year old machine.

most, well, many are now optimized for dual processing if he runs panther. the FSB speed is also a big factor, and the fact that the ibook has more ram will also make it faster than the dual 500, thats why I recommended adding more ram.

While not a perfectly accurate measure of real-world performance, XBench is one way to compare systems side by side. By checking out the site, it appears that the 800 iBook G4 on average holds an advantage over the dual 500.
