Darwin password help

Hi, I'm new to Darwin. I just installed it on my iBook but it says that it requires a login ID and password. My hard drive was erased, so I know that there are no passwords on it. The keyboard works to enter a login but it will not do a safe-boot or single-user mode. I couldn't find help in the forums. Any suggestions would be great.

You can try root for login and the same for password.
