…salvage all data…
How am I supposed to salvage data? I can't even get the computer to recognize the drive.

When the 2 drives that I lost started doing the "clicking" thing they were toast. This was before Target Mode, so I might have been able to recover that data today.

Is there any way to recover the data (target disk mode) without another computer that has a firewire port?

I just tried to boot in single user mode. It works with the iPod conected, but not without. I'm not familiar with Mac's version of DOS, so even if I could fix/identify the problem there, I wouldn't know how to. I'm going to try to boot in safe mode now.
