• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have been getting what I have seen called the "jigsaw" effect on the DVD's of my edited videos when I burn them using iDVD. I do not get this effect using Adobe Premiere Elements 3 on my PC. I bought a Mac for ease of use in editing but the quality of the finished product on my tv sucks. I think the problem must be in iDvd as the same video using on PE3 looks fine. Does Toast burn DVD videos or is it just for data? Does it come with DVD menu Templates? Are there other types of software that also work and are there any free ones?
Simply looking for an alternative to iDVD.

I think Toast is what you're looking for. It comes with an entire suite of burning utilities, including the ability to create DVD videos.

I didn't know what this "jigsaw" effect was so I went Googling and found this in the Apple forums. The guy says that Toast solved the issue and said earlier versions of iDVD didn't have this issue.

Toast is much more basic in what it can do in creating DVDs compared to iDVD.

Adobe does make DVD editing software for the Mac. I believe you can edit for basic Blu-ray disc too, and even burn it.

Apple's Final Cut Suite comes with DVD Studio Pro. That would be pretty pricey just to get DVD editing software. Plus it can not do Blu-ray compatible content at this time.

When you say "I think the problem must be in iDvd as the same video using on PE3 looks fine", do you mean you literally took the same output file and put it through both DVD editing software packages? What is that file type, codecs, sizes, etc? What tool produced that file?
