I cannot open finder and i cannot shut down, sleep or restart my computer. None of the Finder options work. Can anyone help me to get this back to normal

I am having a similar problem (except I can open finder). I can't shutdown or restart etc.

If I have something open then error is "couldn't exit firefox' for instance.

If I have nothing open (finder and top bar disappear) but the dock stays. Sometimes I get the message that 'finder failed to shut down'

I had a look in console and searched for 'shutdown' - a few things there but what should I post for help debugging?

... O and 'coreaudio' (digidesign mbox2 mini) was not responding in activity monitor - and sometimes login also was red.

Thanks

I was told you could delete your login profiles and also repair disk with utility at startup (left my dvd at work).

okay found this

http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=35132&page=2

and saw that you can go ...
1. applications
2. utilities
3. disk utilities (and then verify and repair disk)

Also you can manually restart using console

type this into console:
sudo shutdown -r now (restart)
sudo shutdown -h now (shutdown)

repairing now (let you know how I go)

btw - can you tell this is my first week with a mac?

I am also running Disk Utility now too, lets hope this works.
