Basically the logic board of my macbook has gone down, and i urgently need files from my hard drive. I have the option of putting the hard drive into another macbook, and taken off the files that way. However my macbook was running tiger, and this newer laptop is running leopard! Otherwise everything else is the exact same. Will there be compatability issues if i put my hard drive into this other laptop? do i run the risk of corrupting files?

It would probably work fine, not 100% sure though. But i would not be afraid to try it at least.

Also you can buy one of these external cases and put your hard drive in. Then you just connect it with a USB cable and you get the drive contents available.

I highly recommend one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

It's a universal adapter that allows you to plug just about any hard drive into a USB port without having to install it into an enclosure. Cheap, easy, effective and one of the most often used tools in my IT toolbox :)

I second CWA's recommendation. Much easier and safer than putting your hard drive in another machine. It's not a great risk putting your drive in another MacBook but every time you uninstall and reinstall any hardware you run the risk of damaging something. Good luck getting your files back.

ok. update. Bought an enclosure (15 euro) and it did the trick just perfect. Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated. I can sleep easy tonight.
