Shredder Widget - How does it work?

I have trying to use the "Shredder" widget, but can't seem to get the hang of it. I open it up. I try to select a file on the desktop to shred. The Dashboard disappears! How does this thing work?

Pick up and drag the file, hit F12 and drag the file to the widget.
